Hightech glasses offer entertainment during dental surgery

Cologne (pte017/28.03.2003/11:25) - Fear of the dentists could be a thing of the past with special glasses that entertain you while you are having your teeth pulled out.

The Dental-Eye-Trek, developed by engineers from German company Olympus http://www.olympus.de , is equipped with headphones and a screen which plays music and displays images - drowning out the sound, and blocking the view, of the dreaded dentist's drill.

The glasses, which have been especially designed for the dentist's chair, have been in development for some time. The finished product is to be presented for the first time at the International Dental Show in Cologne http://www.ids-cologne.de later this week.

A spokesman from Olympus said: "It really is like being in the cinema when you are wearing the glasses. The only thing missing is the popcorn."

Dentist Dr Karl-Heinz Sundmacher from the initiative proDente http://www.prodente.de said he thought the glasses were an excellent way to calm nervous patients. He said: "The patients get so involved in the film that they forget where they are and completely relax."

Millions of people world-wide are so terrified of the dentist that they simply do not go, reported the health internet site, Lifeline http://www.lifeline.de but dentists now hope that the glasses will help people to overcome their fears.
