Balkan hospitals preparing for war
US commanders inspect morgues and blood banks

Bucharest/ Sofia (pte039/03.03.2003/13:52) - Balkan villages and towns have been asked to put death and sickness on hold while the US military inspects their morgues and intensive care units for use in the event of a war with Iraq.

According to local media, US commanders have asked authorities in the village of Mihai Kogalniceanu near the Black Sea town of Constanta in Romania to ready local morgues and give them access to local blood banks if necessary.

They have also inspected local health clinics and intensive care departments at nearby hospitals for possible use.

US officers in Sarafovo in south-east Bulgaria have also been inquiring about the state of morgues, hospitals and other health care facilities in the nearby town of Bourgas, local newspaper '24 Chasa' reported.

Both Sarafovo and Mihai Kogalniceanu lie next to military airbases that US troops have been allowed to use.

More than 30 transporter planes and 10 helicopters have landed at the Mihai Kogalniceanu base in the last week, each carrying military equipment, hardware and body bags.

Romanian Foreign Minister Mircea Geoana has denied US troops are planning to use the base for planes leading an attack on Iraq.

He said the US military were using it only as a stop over point in moving troops to Turkey and other parts of the Gulf region.

Two US planes have landed at Sarafovo so far. (newsfox-special Iraq)
