Siemens launches world e-government centre
Focus on solutions for EU entry candidates

Vienna (pte019/28.02.2003/13:22) - Siemens Business Services http://www.sbs.siemens.com/ intends to set up a world 'Center of Competence' for e-government in Vienna, as announced by the company today.

The new centre is to bundle the company's experience in the field of e-government and provide know-how for projects around the world. An initial focus will be the demands placed on EU entry candidates. The company is also working on EU-wide e-government systems.

By its own report, Siemens Business Services achieved an international turnover of 440m euros through e-government in 2002. Fifty per cent of this came from the countries Germany, Belgium, Austria, Italy and Great Britain.

"E-government is not a purely Austrian topic, but must be seen in a European context. Some of the tasks created by the upcoming EU expansion can be solved by e-government," said Franz Geiger, member of the board of Siemens Austria.

Siemens Business Services has been establishing IT services in Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia Herzegovina, among other south and east European countries.

While based in Vienna, the Center of Competence will also have specialized locations in Germany and Italy.
