Mobile operators set up mobile payment platform
Services available across country borders

London (pte031/26.02.2003/17:09) - Mobile operators Orange, Telefonica Moviles, T-Mobile and Vodafone are joining to create a new international platform for payment services, as announced by the companies today http://www.telefonicamoviles.com/eng/prensa/
notas_prensa/notas_prensa_actuales/contenido_busqueda.htm# .

The new "Mobile Payment Organisation" with headquarters in London is to provide a common technical platform for all mobile operators on which even micro-payments can be carried out. The system is to be compatible with existing services in each country.

The four participating firms have set an ambitious target by hoping to establish a standard payment solution for the entire market.

A brand name for the new platform is still in development.

Tim Jones, the service's first director, said: "The history of mobile telecommunications has shown us that success became possible when users could communicate with all networks." An example for this is the success of SMS messaging in Europe, which only became possible once the operators agreed to cooperate.

The project's founders say several other companies have expressed an interest in the platform, including debitel, the KPN Mobile Group and TMN. Together, the four main firms supply services to about 270 million customers.
