Wave of alliances on mobile market
New partnerships announced at 3GSM Congress

Cannes (pte030/19.02.2003/12:28) - In efforts to prevent stagnation on the mobile phone market, mobile communications companies are joining togehter to increase their profits. A wave of new alliances have been announced at the 3GSM Congress http://www.3gsmworldcongress.com/.

Nokia http://www.nokia.com announced it would be working together with IBM http://www.ibm.com and leading databank producer Oracle. T-Mobile is joining up with Microsoft. And Siemens http://www.siemens.com is trying to find partners among mobile network operators, as reported buy heise online.

"After years of promises, new technologies are finally in the hands of the end-users," said Nokia Senior vice-President Erik Anderson. He believes the industry must work together to animate the market, and that the product palette can only be expanded through partnerships. Through its cooperations, Nokia has become active on markets for gaming, business applications, images and music services.

"We have divided Nokia into several business areas," Anderson explained. As a first step, his company plans to work together with IBM to deliver electronic mail to mobile devices for business clients.

Siemens chairman Rudi Lamprecht told journalists that one of the problems with the lack of partnerships up to now has been failed integration: "End-users don't accept the applications because there is too little integration between market participants." He feels his company has a key position due to its millions of customer relationships and its invoicing know-how.

Nokia head Anderson added that part of predicting the future of the market lies in giving people products and seeing how they use them - only then can one see what it will be like if, for example, one day each mobile phone has its own camera.
