Germany's postal company sold undelivered parcels
Investigations by the public prosecutor's office

Bonn (pte016/05.02.2003/10:30) - Investigations are being carried out over claims that Germany's postal company, Deutsche Post, has been selling thousands of undelivered parcels to a Bavarian businesswoman.

The investigations by the public prosecutor's office in Bonn have come following an article in best-selling German magazine 'Spiegel' which uncovered the scam.

According to the magazine, Deutsche Post has been peddling thousands of undelivered or uncollected packages to the woman's firm for years.

The woman, who has not been named for legal reasons, allegedly then sold the items on at a flea market.

Workers at the firm in Bavaria have said that in many cases it would have been possible to find out who the real senders or receivers of the parcels were.

And according to the 'Spiegel' report, Deutsche Post also knew this was possible, but contractually forced the businesswoman to remove and destroy "all personal data or details leading to the rightful owner" from the packages.

A spokesman for Deutsche Post denied the allegations. http://www.deutschepost.de
