Challenge: new mums balancing family and career
One in three women finds it difficult to manage both children and a career

Vienna (pte028/18.03.2013/16:49) - One in three women going back to work full-time after giving birth finds it difficult to manage both children and a career at the same time, research from the Market-Institute in Linz (Upper-Austria) shows.

According to the survey, the biggest worry for working mothers is: who will look after my children if they're ill?

One in two single mothers find balancing family life and a career tantamount to walking the tightrope.

Some 38 percent of the women who answered the survey said returning to the business world after giving birth was absolutely no issue. A further 34 percent that found a new job relatively easily while only 18 percent said it had been rather difficult.

The lack of after-school supervision is the second biggest worry for the new mums, as it means children are often left alone after school and during school holidays.

Many are also afraid of being home late if they have to work overtime or have varying working hours.

Runs to and from school, the crèche, kindergarten or the kids' sporting activities also cause logistical problems for working mums, who would like bosses to be more flexible.

The most important measure for the women is am identical salary scheme as the men's (81 percent).

Part-time opportunities, crèches in the workplace or in the neighbourhood and the possibility of freely choosing the working hours are also unresolved questions high on the women's priority list.

One in two working mothers said they would like fixed working hours without any overtime.

One in four women said they wished they had better support in the workplace to move on with their careers alongside caring for a family.
