(pte/Feb 3, 2005/14:00) -
European football governing body UEFA http://www.uefa.com has awarded the broadcast rights for the 2008 European Championships to Sportfive, a sports marketing agency from Hamburg. The decision comes after a long process of several months, in which UEFA evaluated several bids and narrowed the bidders down to two - Sportfive and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). http://www.uefa.com/uefa/news/Kind=128/newsId=276910.html
"UEFA has decided to work together with Sportfive on the rights," said Lars-Christer Olsson, UEFA's chief executive. "I think it is a major step for UEFA. We have decided to change policy from the past. Now we will adopt a market-by-market approach. Together with Sportfive we will approach the markets individually in Europe and open a competition on the rights to each of the broadcasters in each territory," he said.
The 2004 European Championship saw an increase in viewership of 20 per cent in comparison to the one in 2000. According to Olsson, the value for Euro 2008 should move in similar figures. "There is room for additional income on the European TV, Olsson said. "The market value should be above 600 million euros on the European market," he added. (end)
